Q: What is Pre-Marital Counseling?
Pre-marital counseling gives you the opportunity to sit down together with an experienced marriage counselor and discuss any issues of concern which you may have prior to your wedding. Given our state's divorce rate of 50% (or higher), it's a wise choice to seek guidance when making such a pivotal life commitment.

Q: How does pre-marital counseling work?
The process is flexible. How it works depends on the needs of each couple. If you're simply wanting a chance to make sure you've covered all the bases in terms of talking about communication, conflict resolution, sexual functioning, parenting, financial concerns and family relationships we can usually accomplish that in 3-4 sessions.

But if you're dealing with longstanding problems which threaten the viability of your relationship you may wish to consider a more open-ended timeframe to work on your concerns.

In terms of the process itself, your experience with me will feel much like a series of conversations for your benefit. I am an expert listener and am also highly skilled in recognizing and identifying patterns of communication which can impact emotional intimacy.

Q: Do we have to sign up for a particular number of sessions?
There are advantages to committing to at least four sessions: It gives us the opportunity to get to know each other and for me to fully assess your relational style. However, you are under no obligation to continue for any specific length of time.

Q: I'm engaged to be married soon and I am having serious doubts about spending the rest of my life with the person I'm engaged to. What kind of counseling do you recommend?
Coming into pre-marital counseling together under these circumstances would probably be confusing and not a good use of your time, energy, and resources. Instead, I would recommend that you consider getting some individual therapy first to explore your reluctance and mixed feelings. Once you have greater clarity then you can determine if pre-marital counseling is something you wish to pursue.

Q: How much does pre-marital counseling cost?
