Psychotherapy: Finding help in Oklahoma City
Linda Chapman

What is psychotherapy? How does it work?

Finding a counselor or psychotherapist is a very personal process. Oklahoma City counselors may include:

  • Psychologists
  • Psychiatrists
  • Clinical social workers
  • Professional counselors
  • Marriage & family therapists
  • Psychotherapists
  • Pastoral counselors

It's about the journey, not the destinationWith the exception of psychiatrists, who as medical doctors (M.D.) are authorized to prescribe mental health medications such as anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medications, all counselors and therapists generally employ some form of what is commonly referred to as "talk therapy."

Talk therapy encompasses a wide range of interactive techniques and strategies which are designed to help clients understand themselves, the problems they are struggling with, the people they interact with, and the environments within which they work and live. In my practice, I conceptualize "talk therapy" as a series of conversations which, over time, help my clients identify, prioritize and achieve their goals. Examples of goals people develop in therapy: Becoming more assertive; Feeling less depressed and anxious; Learning how to fight fairly; Increasing self-esteem; Finding a direction in life; Resolving trauma.

Professional training, skills and certification are important, but research has not demonstrated significant differences amongst mental health disciplines. Therefore, a good personal "fit" with your therapist, a sense that you are understood and respected as an individual, and general progress towards your goals may be the best determinant of who is the best counselor for you.

When looking for a therapist, I encourage people to shop around. Ask to talk to potential therapists for a few minutes by phone in advance of making an appointment. Most professionals are more than happy to accomodate such requests. After all, as a client you are a customer. Like any other business, your needs and interests are paramount.

When I work with my clients, I seek to strengthen and support the health that they already have. Most people who visit me already have 95-98% of what they need to solve their own problems and create satisfying lives. Coming to therapy enables people to "tweak" or maximize their own strengths and skills and discover new strategies and points of view that may be beneficial. I'm very pragmatic in my work. If we're following a therapeutic path that is not helpful, we can make course corrections. I don't expect my clients to fit my therapeutic "mold"; Instead, the counseling experience is tailored to each person's needs and goals.

Making the commitment to be present at therapy from week to week signifies a commitment to yourself and your goals. Though you may only participate in sessions once a week or so, you may find that its structure and regularity provides fertile ground for work done the rest of the week. Your existing abilities to cope will be enhanced, and with a "witness" who can provide feedback and objectivity you may find greater meaning and significance in your life.

If you are new to the psychotherapeutic process you may feel some anxiety and fearfulness about seeing a counselor for the first time. I deeply respect people who seek me out for help, and I will do my best to help you feel at ease. We will work together as partners for your benefit.

My office is conveniently located in Oklahoma City near NW 59th & May Avenue. I have designed it as a comfortable and safe place for fostering personal growth. You can request your first session in just a few minutes through the online appointment request system.

I hope to meet you soon.
