Alcohol and Drug Treatment Resources

If you think you (or someone planning to participate in counseling with you) may have a problem with alcohol or drug use, it is important for me to know this.

Dealing with this issue directly and up front may save you valuable time and money -- not to mention your health and well-being.

In the mental health profession, we say that dealing with alcohol and drug issues is primary. In other words, it's a priority to address these issues first since they may be causing or contributing to other issues (like marital problems or other conflicts) and may get in the way of resolving your concerns successfully.

However, it is sometimes tricky to know whether alcohol or drugs are a problem or not since it is normal for people to have trouble realizing or admitting that their usage has gotten out of hand.

Because I do not specialize in alcohol or drug treatment, in most cases I refer people who may have a problem with alcohol or drugs to self-help groups or other providers. Below I've listed some possible sources of help.

If you live in the Oklahoma City area, The Referral Center is an excellent choice for finding out if your level of alcohol or drug usage is a cause for concern. Their phones are answered 24/7, Saturday assessments are available and their services are provided according to ability to pay.

Ways to get help for alcohol and drug issues in the Oklahoma City area:

  1. St. Anthony's START Program offers a free one-hour assessment and a range of services including medical detox, intensive outpatient and inpatient programs.

  2. OU Physicians Department of Psychiatry's ExecuCare program offers "Confidential Addiction Treatment for Executives and Professionals" - Call 405-271-2474

  3. Contact The Referral Center for Alcohol & Drug Services of Oklahoma City at 525-2525 and ask how to get an assessment. This is a 24-hour number, and services are provided on a sliding fee scale to residents of Kingfisher, Oklahoma, Lincoln, Canadian, Celeveland, Pott, Grady, Logan, and McClain Counties.

  4. Substance Abuse Treatment Facility Locator - 1-800-662-HELP | 1-800-662-9832 (Espaņol)
The federal government maintains a referral database and hotline connecting callers with over 12,000 treatment programs nationwide.

  5. Chance To Change offers a free community education series about alcohol use and its impact on the family. Call their office at 405-840-9000 for more information.

  6. View a list of agencies and clinics in the Oklahoma City area which offer treatment for substance abuse problems.

  7. You can search the OASIS social service database for other agencies and services.

  8. If your concern involves alcohol, consider taking a brief, confidential online screening questionnaire.
