History of Healing Touch

Jump to a video about Therapeutic Touch, a related practice

Healing Touch is a form of hands-on healing which has its ancient roots in prayer, the laying-on of hands and anointing with oil as performed by Jesus as a major part of his ministry.

With increasing interest in complementary medicine, Healing Touch was developed as a modern healing modality by Janet Mentgen, RN, in the 1980's. It is currently used in private homes, hospitals, hospices, physicians' offices, and churches (among other places) as an energy-based modality.

In Oklahoma City, research studies involving Healing Touch are being organized at two major hospitals. Members of First Christian Church of Edmond and Southern Hills Christian Church (also of Edmond) have recently received training in Healing Touch and are developing Healing Touch ministries in their respective churches. We have an active Healing Touch community that is a wonderful resource for students and practitioners alike.

How it Works

Healing Touch uses light touch to influence the energy system. It can affect the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual dimensions of health and healing. It complements traditional health care and can be used in collaboration with other approaches to healing. It is based on an intentional, heart-centered caring relationship between the Healing Touch practitioner and the client.

The focus of Healing Touch is on the body's energy system: the energy field that surrounds the body, and the energy centers which regulate the flow of energy from the energy field to the physical body.

The goal of Healing Touch is to balance and harmonize the energy system. This supports the client's capacity to self-heal. Please note that the healing process may or may not include a cure for specific illnesses or conditions. It is not an alternative to traditional medical care but rather complements traditional medicine. Most clients experiencing Healing Touch report that it is a deeply relaxing experience.

Clients receiving Healing Touch remain fully clothed (except for shoes) and recline comfortably on a massage table or may be seated while receiving a treatment. Soothing and relaxing music is played during the session. The healer uses light touch (about the weight of a nickel) or, if preferred, can hold her hands in the energy field above the body of the healee. Healing Touch may also be performed at a distance -- much like prayer -- with equal benefit.

  • My Path as a Healer

My own interest in Healing Touch developed after a physician friend of mine gave me a gift certificate for four sessions. She had experienced the benefit of Healing Touch first-hand and wanted to share that with me. After experiencing it myself I wanted to gain the skills to share it with others.

As a Healing Touch Practitioner Apprentice, I have completed Healing Touch Levels I-IV.

The Healing Touch certificate program is now taught throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, South Africa and South America.
